Mikhail Shaidorov’s historic victory at the 2026 Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics has sparked a level of national celebration in Kazakhstan not seen since the 1990s. By winning the men’s singles title, Shaidorov became the first Kazakhstani figure skater to win Olympic gold and the country’s first Winter Olympic champion in 32 years.
His reception at home was nothing short of a “hero’s welcome.” Here is a summary of the gifts and the atmosphere surrounding his return to Almaty.

The “Iron Horses”: Two High-Profile Cars

The most talked-about gifts were two luxury vehicles presented to the champion and his family:
- The Hyundai Palisade: This was a personal gift from world-renowned Kazakh singer Dimash Qudaibergen. Shaidorov skated his gold-medal-winning program to a medley of Dimash’s songs (Confessa and Diva Dance). In a symbolic gesture, Dimash promised Shaidorov a car “as a thank you” for the performance. The keys were personally handed over in March with the inscription: “Mishabai, congratulations on your victory – Pride of Kazakhstan.”
- The Audi Q8 (for his father): In one of the most emotional moments of the homecoming, Kazakh businessman Arsen Tomsky gifted Shaidorov’s father, Stanislav, an Audi Q8. This was a tribute to the fact that Stanislav had famously sold his own car years ago to fund Mikhail’s early training—a sacrifice that has now come full circle.
Real Estate & State Honors
Beyond the vehicles, the government and private sectors ensured Shaidorov would never have to worry about housing:
- Three-Bedroom Apartment: The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan gifted him a spacious three-bedroom apartment in the capital city, Astana.
- A Second Apartment: A leading developer in Almaty also presented him with a separate luxury apartment in his hometown.
- The Barys Order (Second Degree): President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev awarded Mikhail one of the nation’s highest state honors for his exceptional service to the country’s prestige.
- Cash Prize: Shaidorov received a state-mandated bonus of $250,000 USD for his gold medal.
The Emotional Connection to Denis Ten
For fans, the most touching part of Shaidorov’s victory was his tribute to the late Denis Ten, the 2014 bronze medalist who was tragically killed in 2018.
“Denis opened the road for us. That road was thorny for him and thorny for me… I want to express gratitude to Denis for what he did for our sport,” Shaidorov said during his post-win interviews.
Upon arriving at Almaty airport on February 28, he was met by hundreds of fans, including young skaters from the Denis Ten Academy, proving that he has effectively taken up the mantle as the new “Prince of Kazakh Skating.”
